A diel and seasonal deep-sea faunal monitoring by crawler within the Barkley canyon (NEPTUNE-Canada)

Recent advances in cabled observatory video-imaging now enable faunal monitoring at high frequency over extended periods of time (from seconds to years). Temporally-scheduled video imaging can be used to carry out a reliable faunal monitoring in spite of biases in population and biodiversity assessments due to behavioral rhythms (i.e. which can occur under the form of rhythmic massive population displacements). In this study, we carried out a video-transect survey with the Deep Sea Crawler Wally. The crawler is connected to the NEPTUNE (Canada) network at a cold-seep site at ~890 m depth in the Barkley Canyon (Canadian NE Pacific) and can be operated in near real-time remotely from any computer worldwide via the internet. We counted the number of animals appearing in back and forth video-transects taken at 4-h frequency for four days every two weeks over six months. Current speed (as marker of the local internal tidal regime), temperature, salinity, methane and oxygen concentration environmental variables were measured at high temporal resolution (all frequencies <3 minutes, depending on sensor) throughout the observational period. Time series analysis consisting of periodicity screening and waveform analysis (for rhythms phase determination) were carried out. Preliminary results are discussed in relation to the feasibility of video monitoring with crawling mobile platforms of reduced mobility but with the elevated capacity of high frequency data acquisition over virtually unlimited durations of time.
